Get A Taste Of Zen From Secret Recipe
July 23 2007 - BUSINESS TIMES
SECRET Recipe, a household name in the country, is coming out with ZEN, a semi-fine dining eatery that would help the company boost its profits.
Unlike its current outlets that target the masses, ZEN aims for office workers and young professionals who don’t mind paying slightly higher prices.
Secret Recipe Cakes and Café Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Steven Sim said he is introducing the new concept that has greater emphasis on the varieties of cakes.
ZEN by Secret Recipe is set to make a debut this month at Mid-Valley megamall.
“We will start with a kiosk and later on, full-scale restaurant.
“We plan to open two restaurants a month and we target to open them at places like the Suria KLCC, The Pavillion, The Garden and Sunway Pyramid,” he said when met by Business Times in Kuala Lumpur recently.
ZEN’s expansion may follow Secret Recipe’s mode, by expanding through wholly-owned and franchise outlets throughout the country.
It will be an urban chain of semi-fine dining, targeted at people between age 20 and 40, as well as foreign tourists.
Sim said ZEN has a cozy ambience with black, silver and brown background. “It is more arty but trendy,” he said.
“The food will still be fusion (like Secret Recipe), but emphasis will be more on fine dessert with a greater variety of decorative cakes and desserts,” Sim enthused.
Sim had been toying with the idea of opening ZEN restaurants for the past one year.
“To make it a reality, it takes a lot of work,” he said.
After conducting market research on such a concept, he decided to introduce ZEN, which emphasises personalised products and a lot of bakers’ touch.
“Investment in ZEN is not heavy as we are already in the business. We use the same central kitchen but a different team of chefs and bakers,” he added.
According to him, a few hundred thousand ringgit was required to develop a brand and making the concept fresh, and another RM100,000 was needed to build the store.
“Developing is easy for us as we have the facility and people, it is something we are good at and it is our forte,” he said.
Sim said he used internal funds to finance ZEN.
Locally, Secret Recipe is doing well with 130 outlets nationwide. Secret Recipe also has 30 outlets abroad, managed on franchise basis.
The chain of café plans to come out with a bigger menu for health conscious people and diabetics.
